The position of Russian experts on the interdisciplinary assessment of body dysmorphic disorder and body-focused repetitive behaviors as part of obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders

Abstract

This paper presents current data on the prevalence, clinical structure, relationship with obsessive-compulsive disorder, diagnosis, and treatment of body dysmorphic
disorder and body-focused repetitive behavior. It critically analyzes current trends in expanding the diagnosis of obsessive-compulsive disorder, narrowing the diagnostic
boundaries of delusional disorders, and distinguishing obsessive-compulsive disorder from delusions. Using models of both body dysmorphic disorder and body-focused
repetitive behavior, it demonstrates their high public health significance, significant prevalence, diagnostic difficulties, and the insufficient development of treatment
approaches. Based on the presented data, recommendations are provided for improving the care of patients with these two diagnoses.
