Insulin Coma Therapy: A Bygone Ineffective Method of Treating Mental Disorders or a Victim of Prejudice?

Abstract

This article considers the historical background of insulin coma therapy, highlights in detail the discussion regarding the effectiveness and safety of this treatment method, as well as presenting arguments from both supporters and opponents of the approach. Special attention is given to the methodology of previous research on the topic, as well as a critical analysis of that research. Data on the use of insulin coma therapy and its modifications (accelerated insulin coma therapy) in our country are presented, along with an exploration of the neurobiological mechanisms behind the antipsychotic effects of insulin shock treatments, including their impact on the neurotransmitter system. In conclusion, the article emphasizes the need for further evidence-based research to draw a reasoned conclusion about the efficacy and safety of insulin coma therapy.
