Cariprazine — a New Drug for Treatment of Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder

Abstract

The review presents an analysis of contemporary scientific publications data dealing with practical aspects of treatment schizophrenia and bipolar affective disorder (BAD) with cariprazine. Antipsychotic cariprazine is a partial agonist of dopamine D3/D2 receptors with a predominant effect on D3 receptors. High efficacy and good tolerability of cariprazine in theatment of schizophrenia and BAR patients are established in clinical trials and in real medical practice. Cariprazine favorably differs from many antipsychotics because it has no negative effect on metabolic parameters, prolactin levels and QT interval. The drug may be useful for threatment of adult patients with schizophrenia with positive and negative symptoms and BAD, including those with a high risk of metabolic and cardiovascular disorders.
