Optimising approaches to clinical trials of new anxiolytics and antidepressants

Abstract

Introduction: main directions to solve major issues of clinical trials of new anxiolytics and antidepressants are given based on the results of a previously published literature review.

Results: Positive influence on the results and significance of studies of new anxiolytics and antidepressants can be achieved by: administrative measures at the planning stage of the study, blind reviewing of the clinical study protocol and its advance publication, pre-study trainings, the possibility of rating the professionalism of the research team, determining acceptable limits for the recruitment rate of patients, using active placebo, slow initial dose titration, competitive use of the clinician and patient administered endpoints, implementation of study designs that limit the placebo effect, assessment of an individual set of symptoms within an established diagnosis, and probabilistic description not only adverse but also clinically relevant effects profile.

Conclusion: Promising organizational solutions have been identified to improve the quality and relevance of the results of contemporary studies of new anxiolytics and antidepressants.
