Abstract
Currently, the goal of schizophrenia therapy is considered to be recovery, but the concept of "recovery" is not fully formed, the question of the relationship between recovery and remission is open, its criteria and factors influencing the achievement of recovery are clarified. The aim of the literature review was to analyze the problem of recovery in schizophrenia. The goal of the study was to discuss basic concept of recovery and the role of injectable second-generation prolonged-acting antipsychotics in achieving recovery in patients with schizophrenia.
Methods. A literature review was conducted in PubMed and Google using various combinations of keywords: schizophrenia, remission, recovery, injectable antipsychotics of the second generation of prolonged action. Literature lists of all identified publications were manually checked for additional articles and for relevance to the problem at hand. Inclusion criteria: relevant full-text articles, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses of schizophrenia recovery. Exclusion criteria: clinical trial publications, low-quality articles.
Results. Current views on the concept of recovery, the relationship between recovery and symptomatic and functional remission, the components of recovery and criteria of its evaluation, factors important for achieving recovery are presented. The value of prolonged antipsychotic therapy in the form of injections has been shown not only to control the symptomatology of schizophrenia, but also to improve functioning and quality of life of patients.
Conclusion. Functional outcome should be a priority goal for therapeutic interventions in schizophrenia. Only a comprehensive and multifaceted approach that includes effective pharmacotherapy can improve outcome in schizophrenia. The use of second-generation injectable antipsychotic prolongers contributes to the chances of recovery in patients with schizophrenia
