RISK FACTORS AND SUICIDE PREVENTION IN SCHIZOPHRENIA: FOCUS ON THE ROLE OF MODERN INJECTABLE ANTIPSYCHOTICS-PROLONGS

Abstract

Relevance. Suicide prevails among the causes of death in schizophrenia and schizophrenic spectrum disorders, it occurs with a significant frequency in the risk group for developing psychosis and at the stage of the first psychotic episode. The purpose of the literature review was to analyze the problem of suicidal behavior in patients with schizophrenia. The objectives of the study included the discussion of suicide risk factors and the place of injectable antipsychotics-prolongs of the second generation in the prevention of suicide in patients with schizophrenia. Methods. A systematic review of the literature in PubMed and Google was conducted. Various combinations of keywords were used: schizophrenia, depression, suicide, risk factors, prevention, antipsychotic therapy, injectable antipsychotics of the second generation of prolonged action. The references from all the identified publications were checked manually in order to find additional articles and for compliance with the problem under consideration. Inclusion criteria: relevant full-text articles, systematic reviews, meta-analyses on the problem of suicidal behavior in patients with schizophrenia. Exclusion criteria: publication of clinical trial results, low-quality articles. Results. Modern ideas about clinical, psychosocial, demographic risk factors of suicide, including at various stages of the course of the disease, are presented. Approaches to the prevention of suicidal behavior in patients with an emphasis on antipsychotic therapy are considered. Conclusion. The use of injectable antipsychotics-prolongs of the second generation contributes to improving the quality of life, improving social functioning, preventing suicide and reducing the mortality of patients with schizophrenia.
