Review of randomized controlled research on atypical antipsychotics with long-term anti-relapse therapy bipolar affective disorder

Abstract

This article is a review of the results of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of the efficacy of atypical antipsychotics (AAPs) in the secondary prevention of bipolar affective disorder. The use of AAs in this area seems to be very promising, given their ability to stop not only current affective, but also psychotic symptoms, as well as good tolerance compared to classical antipsychotics. At the same time, long-term, almost lifelong therapy requires special attention to the safety of the drugs used, so this review also pays attention to the evaluation of adverse events observed during RCTs.
The review provides a summary table of RCTs of AARP in the preventive therapy of bipolar affective disorder, as well as meta-analyses of their results. Based on the available data, the authors developed a table containing information on the comparative efficacy of AARP with an assessment of the level of evidence of the available data and recommendations for monitoring the safety of therapy, which can become the basis for the formation of practical recommendations for the use of AARP in the prophylactic treatment of bipolar disorder.
