Therapy of depression during pregnancy: find the solutions in the face of uncertainty

Abstract

Depression in women during pregnancy is associated with obstetric pathology and may influence the development of the fetus, as well as the risk of mental disorders in the child. The question of the benefits or harms of use of antidepressants in treating depression in pregnant women is still open due to lack of information, comparative studies, the challenging and the high responsibility of the special studies. Current recommendations are not strictly prohibit the use of antidepressants during pregnancy. This question is to be decided individually in each case. The possible consequences of both the disease and the therapy for mother and fetus must be taking into account. Women with depression should receive a comprehensive information about potential risks when planning the pregnancy.
