Metabolic syndrome in patients with schizophrenia (a review)

Abstract

This publication provides an overview of literature on epidemiology, pathological mechanisms, prevention, and treatment of metabolic syndrome (MS), as well as other metabolic disorders in patients with schizophrenia treated with antipsychotics. The paper provides diagnostic criteria of MS, adopted by various international organizations, recommendations for prevention of risk factors of metabolic disorders in this population, as well as general guidelines on correction of antipsychotic therapy.
