Neuroinflammatory hypothesis of schizophrenia and new therapeutical approaches
Abstract
This paper reviews the current state of knowledge about the neuroinflammatory schizophrenia hypothesis and a possible link to another pathogenetic theories, e.g. glutamatergic. Results of multiple randomized clinical trials conducted to examine the efficacy of the anti-inflammatory agents (minocycline, celecoxib, aspirin, etc) in positive and negative schizophrenia symptoms are analyzed. Moreover, this paper highlights an actual scientific data on the microglial cells as the resident immune competent cells of the brain.
